It is with great pleasure that I welcome you to our new This is City magazine in this, our 125th anniversary year.
Since its establishment in 1894, City has been an integral part of London’s success story. We have grown, diversified, survived two world wars, gained university title and in 2016, joined the University of London, a measure of just how far we have improved our academic standing since our Victorian forefathers established an institute of advanced education in an impoverished Islington Square.
As the magazine explains, City has made remarkable progress over recent years. Our students are among the most satisfied in London and around half of our academic staff are producing research of world-leading or internationally excellent quality.
As well as focusing on quality, City has grown consistently since 2010 and we now have 20,000 students in five Schools, 46% of whom are postgraduates. Over half are from the UK, around 11% are from the EU with the remainder from over 160 countries around the globe. More than 140,000 former students from over 180 countries are members of the City Alumni Network.
City remains the only university in London to be both committed to academic excellence and focused on business and the professions. We are very proud of the progress we have made as we continue to pursue our ambition to be a leading global university. I do hope you enjoy This is City.
